Linear posting

Normally with a blog about a trip like ours, the bits of information come in a regular, linear flow. Sorry that has not happened here. Too little Internet access, and too little time. Now that I have access, I feel compelled to post something, but bed is calling and we have a long day tomorrow. So, I'll give the really brief version and promise to do a full journal afterward.

We are in Asheville, NC. As others have posted, today had few miles, only 30, but most were down and fast. We toured the Biltmore and had a good dinner downtown. Tomorrow is going to be tough. It is the last 90 miles of the BRP. We will attempt to do something less than 90, not sure how far yet. However, the terrain is supposed to be some of the toughest and prettiest so far, and that is saying something.

I have lots of great pictures and even some video of one of those thrilling descents. Will post as soon as I can.

Experiences in Blue Ridge

This is absolutely the most beautiful area I've ridden in. The hills are slow and long, but there is almost always something interesting to look at - scenic veiws, bright wildflowers, animals (deer, turkey, Tommy G. saw a bear on the first day.). We even passed by a few areas where rock walls were dripping with water. We rode 5 miles down Mt. Michell this morning in a thick fog (new experience) and through two dark tunnels on the road (also new). And, after riding behind Diane and James, who were listening to their ipods and constantly raving about how wonderful it is to have music while slogging away uphill, I brought out my own mp3 player, and that Really Does help on long hilly stretches. Time to go to Biltmore now. See ya! ~ Tevah

Thursday's Ride

As most readers of this blog have come to realize we have have limited cell and internet service. The mountain climbs have been challenging while the descents have been great (though I have yet to break 40 mph. The views (and scenery) has been breathtaking, the food very good and the company of fellow riders outstanding.
Today's ride was, in my opinion, the highlight of the trip. Driving up Mt. Mitchell and then taking our bikes down the mountain in very dense fog. Five miles straight down. Still never broke 40 mph. From there the majority of today's ride was downhill, filled with great views and several tunnels to navigate. Of the 30 mile ride today, 25 were downhill (and it was great).
Many are showering so that we can load up and tour the Biltmore Estate and winery.
Later!

Climbs are tough, downhills are great!

The parkway is beautiful! Even when you are struggling up a mountain at 5mph the scenery helps take your mind off the pain. You do miss some sites on the 40-50mph descents but it is so much fun I don't mind. Riding everyday with great company and beautiful sites to see. Life is good.

Greetings from Dianne

Hey
We are having a great time on the Blue Ridge. The climbs are tough , 4,5 & 6 miles per hr. Slow and steady. The view is great we recommend that everyone do the ride in a convertable. Paige thank you for the note. Also the temp. is great in July. Angie thanks for the goodies wish you were here. There is a battle between Tommy and Kenneth to see who quite first. They keep waiting for the other to die on the side of the road. As always lot of good company and many laughs.
Love to all

Breaking The Silence

We have just emerged from the middle of nowhere and are in Sparta, NC of "In the Heat of Night" fame. This is the first Internet access we have had. No, I am not having withdrawals.

Presently sitting in the Burger King parking lot, mooching Internet. Here are the quick highlights: hills are TOUGH!, 2 wineries, 1 candy store, 2 thunderstorms, lots of wildlife. Need to go now and light the fire on the patio so we can enjoy the chocolate and wine while we watch the sunset and the deer in the meadows. Life is good! All is well.

Waynesboro, VA

Finally, we made it after the excitement today. We found the local restaurant, though not a hole in the wall. South River Grill in Waynesboro, VA right off I-64 is most excellent. Full house and they squeezed in the 12 of us. My food was great. We sat outside on the patio, no bugs, no sweat, IN JULY!

Quick trip to the trail head to see if there was an unloading place. The truck (Angela, Clay, Dianne, Clay, Tommy G.) opted to drive down the BRP a bit. Big mistake; there was no down about it, just up. They are nervous. The van (Joy, Jake, Tevah, Laurie, Beth, Allen R.) opted to drive up the Skyline drive a bit. Nothing but up; however we don't have to ride that tomorrow.

Requisite Wal-Mart visit was a surreal experience. The people were interesting, but the check out resulted in a melt down of the cash machine at the "fast lane self checkout". The 7-Eleven stop was just as interesting; low riding shorts on the patrons.

Ready to move on and get on the bike. On the bike at 7:30 AM, dinner at 7:30 PM, 86 miles in between. We shall see.

Shocking!

Repaired shock in Knoxville. Too much a@# in the back?!?  Have fly traveling with us for two days. Lunch now in Bristol, VA at Applebee's. No more chain restaurants; hole in the wall, locals only.

Whew! 1st Leg

I have been concerned about the riding, but forgot about the driving. This is really Day 1, the drive from Natchez, AL to Gadsden, AL, 412 miles, 7 passengers in the van, a long 5.5 hrs.

Tomorrow, 533 miles to Waynesboro and Mile 0 of the BRP.

Packing

The bikes are in the trailer, the bags are being packed. I'm sure we will forget something, but more than likely we will all bring more than we need. Below is a rough agenda of the trip. Later I'll give spec's on bikes and equipment for the gear heads out there.

7/12 Thur - load bikes
7/13 Fri - 5 leave with truck and trailer in the morning, 7 leave in the afternoon in my van (should be cozy) for Gadsden, AL
7/14 - drive to Waynesboro, VA (north end of BRP, south end of Skyline Drive) another site
7/15 - Day 1 Waynesboro to Peaks of Otter
7/16 - Day 2 Peaks of Otter to Meadows of Dan
7/17 - Day 3 Meadows of Dan to Doughton Park
7/18 - Doughton Park to Linville Falls
7/19 - Linville Falls to Asheville, NC
7/20 - Asheville to Cherokee, NC
7/21 - drive back to Natchez

Tripping Out!

We are on a trip again. A group of cyclists from Natchez are going to attempt to ride the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, north to south, in 6 days; 470 miles. Last year we did the Natchez Trace; 444 miles. However, the BRP is like the Trace on steroids; National Park, two lanes, limited speed, tourists, lots of brown signs but with mountains instead of hills. The truth is, only a few of us intend to ride the whole thing. Most want to have time and energy to enjoy the sites, and there is a lot to see. So, you're invited to come along with us virtually. I'll make updates as often as possible and try to get the others to sit down and document their experiences much like we did on the Trace trip (N2N06). I still occasionally go back and read that blog to relive the whole experience.
